Registering for the SAT

Registering for the test is the first step to taking the SAT. It’s a simple and straightforward process, but you will want to get it done as soon as possible, to ensure you have a spot at a test center. Due to the pandemic and national guidelines, there are limited spots at many test centers and a greater risk of cancellation. Registering ahead of time can be a huge relief, and you can focus on preparing for the test instead. I’ll be outlining the steps you need to take to successfully register for the SAT.

#1: When are you taking it?

First off, you need to decide when you’re going to take the test and the test date that works best for you. This can change depending on the grade you’re in, and how much you’ve prepared for the test. If you need more time to study, you may want to register for a test date that is 2-3 months from now. If you feel prepared enough, you can attempt to register for the soonest test date.

If you’re a junior, you can take the test in the spring/summer of your junior year. If you’re a senior, you may need to take the test in the fall of your senior year before submitting your applications to colleges. It depends on your grade level and level of preparation, so select a test date that works best for you. You can find a list of test dates on the College Board website.

#2: Where are you taking it?

Check with your high school. Many high schools offer the test several times throughout the year, and they’re sometimes free of charge for students. If your high school offers the test, you can simply contact your teacher or counselor, and ask them for the necessary steps to register through the school.

If your school doesn’t offer the SAT, then you will need to look into test centers in surrounding areas. A simple search on the College Board Website will allow you to go through a list of test centers in your vicinity, and you can choose the most feasible one. Make sure that the test center you wish to take the test at offers it on that particular test date.

#3: Register!

Finally, all you need to do is register for the test! If you plan on taking the test at your high school, contact your counselor for details on how to register. It may be simpler and more straightforward if you’re registering for it through your school.

However, if you’re taking it at a test center, all you need to do is register through the College Board Website. There are a series of steps, and you’ll need to fill out various pieces of information to completely register. The steps are fairly straightforward, and the website will guide you through the process.
